The Société israélite d'encouragement pour le travail was founded around 1824. The Courrier du Bas-Rhin, in its June 11, 1826 issue, reported on the meeting in the following terms:
"We have before us the précis of the general meeting of the Société Israélite d'Encouragement pour le Travail, and we make it our duty to publish the honorable work of this society, which deserves in every respect to be appreciated. We will not be surprised at the large number of members it has, when we read in the report of the secretary of the board, the benefits it propagates among the destitute class of Israelites in Alsace, Already nearly a hundred pupils are being brought up in a public school, and it is in this school that the subjects destined for the arts and crafts are chosen; the society has barely existed for a year, and already 28 apprentices have been placed in various workshops in this town; it is in the speech given by M. the secretary of the board of this society, that we will see with interest the philanthropic views which direct it".
