Scene from the Story of Don Quixote
Don Quixote and the false princess of Micomicon
Manufacture Royale d'Aubusson.
18th century.
254 x 311 cm

The false princess comes to ask Don Quixote to restore her to her throne; she kneels before Don Quixote, while Sancho wears the knight's helmet. The false princess is none other than the young peasant girl named Dorothée.
The many episodes in the novel by Miguel de Cervantes (1547 - 1616) inspired great cartoon painters such as Charles Coypel at the Gobelins and Natoire at Beauvais. Woven in wool and silk (wool warp - 4.5 warp threads per cm, wool and silk weft), the tapestry is doubled and folded. It shows reweaving in the center of the upper border, as well as old restorations, accidents and rereading.
