Bon BOULLOGNE (Paris 1649 - 1717)
Equestrian Portrait of Louis XIV as a Roman Emperor
Canvas
(Old restorations, scratches)
142 x 96 cm

Old attribution to Van Loo and François de Troy.

We thank François Marandet for suggesting this attribution. He dates our painting to around 1695-1699 and compares it with Le Retour de Jephté (canvas, 152 x 217 cm) in the Hermitage Museum in Saint Petersburg. He proposes that the landscape is a view of the Grand Trianon Palace, and suggests that our picture was painted after the commission for the Bacchus suite for the Trianon (1693. The only painting in the series, formerly in the Musée des Beaux-Arts de Caen, has been destroyed).
