Pablo PICASSO (1881-1973) (after) Rag-Time by Igor Strawinsky for eleven instruments, piano transcription by the author. London, J. & W. Chester, Ltd. 1919. A folio in-4 [34.5 x 27 cm], in sheets, on vellum, illustrated on the cover with a reproduction of a drawing by Picasso. Small loss at the right edge of the cover, the latter skilfully restored along the vertical fold. A fine oblique broken fold at the foot. Small loss at the foot of the 4th cover and a few other tiny tears at the brittle edges of the paper. Temporary 150% mark-up stamp affixed by the publisher to the title leaf. The original ink drawing, from the collection of Mr. and Mrs. Igor Stravinsky, New York, was sold on May 15, 2015 at Christie's. Picasso met Igor Stravinsky in 1917, and the two remained friends throughout their lives. The painter painted the musician's portrait on several occasions. A score for eleven instruments, Ragtime was published in 1919. The two men collaborated on the Ballets Russes project founded by Serge Diaghilev. In 1920, for the ballet Pulcinella, Picasso designed the sets and costumes, while Stravinsky provided the score derived from Pergolesi, inaugurating his return to a neoclassical style.
