Jean COCTEAU (1889-1963) L.A.S. and corrected typescript, June-July 1957; 1page in-4 on Santo-Sospir letterhead, and 2 1/4 pages in-4. June 3. He hopes that Clergue has received his book [La Corrida du 1er mai] "and its real author Jean-Marie [Magnan]"; if not, he must ask Grasset for it... "I'm overwhelmed by an awful wave of multiple tasks. I'll be in Paris on the 11th for the Unicorn at the opera [the ballet La Dame à la licorne] and the Weill exhibition. [...] Of course you have the poster. I'm taking Picasso's drawing back to Cape Town on the 24th for the Arles exhibition"... July 6th. Typescript with numerous autograph corrections, entitled Quelques paroles de Jean Cocteau lors du vernissage de l'exposition Picasso au Musée Réattu. He evokes his stays at the Hôtel Nord Pinus and the statue of Mistral on the square, and expresses his delight at this exhibition devoted to Picasso, who, like King Midas, "transforms everything he touches into gold [...] the gold of the spirit, a gold whose value is incalculable"... He ends by saluting Luis-Miguel Dominguin, who "knows well that for us, poets, painters or bullfighters, there is only one real danger, and that is the public." On the cover, a.s. from Jean-Marie Magnan: "Amitié à la forteresse d'amitié" (Friendship to the fortress of friendship). Attached are 2 telegrams from Cocteau to Clergue (July 13 and 18); and 8 letters from Lucien CLERGUE to Cocteau (including one minute a.s., the rest in carbon copy), April-August 1957. CCC p. 36-37. Lots 24 to 68 were sold at provisional with possibility of reunion
