SCIAMA. Feathers and Plumes. Un centenaire 1812-1912. Paris: Société anonyme Sciama, 1912. - In-folio, 307 x 240: 74 pp, (1 f.), 2 plates, 1 table, illustrated cover. Bordeaux morocco, multiple gilt fillets framing the boards, fleurons and laurel wreaths in the corners, large medallion with fleurons in the center bearing the dates 1812-1912, ornate ribbed spine, inner frame in the same morocco decorated with a roulette and gilt fillets, green silk lining and endpapers brocaded with white and gold laurel wreaths, double endpapers, gilt edges, cover and spine preserved, bordered slipcase (René Aussourd). Published to mark the 100th anniversary of the Parisian plumassier Sciama. It retraces the history of this company founded in 1812 by Nissim Sciama, illustrated with 2 hors-texts reproducing watercolors by Millot (domestic birds and birds of paradise) and numerous black reproductions in the text. It also includes a double-page table of Ostrich feather exports from the Cape of Good Hope between 1838 and 1911. Even then, the company had to respond to animal rights activists: "Let the public rest assured! Native birds are no longer killed in Europe or the United States for the manufacture of ornamental feathers. If some part of their plumage is sometimes used, it's because the bird was previously hunted for food...". This copy was printed for Adolphe Gompel, founder of the "Aux Dames de France" department stores and a shareholder in the Sciama company. Sumptuous decorated morocco binding by René Aussourd. Minor restoration to one spine.
