SCHÖNBRON (Anna Maria von).
Costumes for Schiller's Trauerspiels: Maria Stuart.
- Large in-8, 261 x 208, 25 plates including engraved title. Paperback, moth-eaten pink paper cover, tan half-chagrin box-book, black paper boards, covered with a wide rectangle of marbled paper bordered by a gilt roulette, ornate smooth spine, black title-piece, gilt initial F at foot (later binding and slipcase, the latter made from the old binding).

Beautiful album comprising an engraved title and 24 plates engraved and colored at the time, representing the costumes of the characters in the tragedy Marie Stuart by Friedrich von Schiller (1759-1805).

This is an extremely rare occasional publication for the charity performance given in March 1816 on the stage of the society theater of Count Clam-Gallas's palace, in aid of the hospital of the Brothers of Mercy in Prague. The characters were played by members of the nobility.

The compositions were based on drawings by the Countess of Schönborn, obviously referring to Maria Anna von Kerpen (1784-1862), wife of Friedrich Karl Joseph, Count of Schönborn (1781-1849).

Only two copies are listed on WorldCat, one in Weimar, the other in Amsterdam. There is also one in the Austrian National Library in Vienna.

A fine copy in later paperback and slipcase, very well preserved despite some rubbing on the slipcase covers.

Provenance:
Gilt letter F at the foot of the slipcase spine.
