SAINT-HILAIRE (Émile Marco de).
L'Art de mettre sa cravate de mille et une manières, enseigné et démontré en dix-huit leçons.
Paris: La Librairie universelle, 1828. - In-18, 146 x 88: frontispiece, 160 pp. 5 plates, printed cover. Red half-maroquin with corners, gilt fillets, ornate smooth spine, gilt head, untrimmed, cover preserved (Canape).

Colas, 2618 (for the original 1827 edition) - Lipperheine 1697 - Hiler, 772.

Very rare eighth edition of this pochade by Émile Marco de Saint-Hilaire.

Eight editions were published between 1827 and 1828. The first appeared on July 7, 1827, and the eighth after October 11, 1828. The Bibliographie de la France only mentions the original, second, fourth, sixth and seventh editions, stating that the third and fifth were unknown, and does not mention the eighth. However, the latter 3 do exist: the third is cited in the bibliography in La jeunesse de Balzac: Balzac imprimeur: Balzac et Madame de Berny, page 437; a copy of the fifth edition is listed in the BNF catalog (Notice n°: FRBNF36380996), and here we have a copy of the eighth.

There is every reason to believe that these three editions are reissues of the previous edition, but it is undeniable that they are rare, and no copies marked "eighth edition" are to be found in the CCFR.

The edition is illustrated with a frontispiece portrait of the author, lithographed after a drawing by Henry MONNIER, and 5 plates, including 4 fold-outs, with 38 explanatory figures.

A very fine copy bound by Canape, complete with the cover marked "9th edition". From the library of Jacques Renout, a French-Brazilian bibliophile.
Minor rubbing to hinges. Covers soiled and lined. Restored tears to some plates.

Provenance:
Jacques Renout, with bookplate designed by Tancrède Synave.
