SAINT-HILAIRE (Émile Marco de). L'Art de mettre sa cravate de toutes les manières connues et usitées, enseigné et démontré en seize leçons. Brussels: Perrichon aîné, 1827. - In-18, 153 x 95 : 80, iv pp. 5 plates, printed cover. Purple glazed half calf, smooth spine decorated, gilt head, untrimmed, cover preserved (Bernasconi). Hanotaux and Vicaire, La Jeunesse de Balzac: Balzac imprimeur, 1825-1828, no. 62 (for the Paris original). Rare Brussels counterfeit of this "indispensable work for all our fashionables", published the same year as the Paris original printed by Balzac. Both a pochade and a manual for the man of the world, this delightful little work shows that the tie was far more than the sad male attribute we know today. The sixteen lessons by Baron Émile de l'Empésé, pseudonym of writer and feuilletonist Émile Marco de Saint-Hilaire (1796-1887), are preceded by a comprehensive History of Ties and illustrated with an out-of-text portrait and 32 explanatory figures on 4 fold-out plates. Among the different types of ties and knots presented are the sentimental tie, the Bergami tie, the mathematical tie, the gastronome tie... A fine copy bound by Bernasconi, complete with cover boards, from the libraries of the poet and lyricist André Sciama (1861-1953), and Jules Coüet (1860-1938), bibliophile and librarian-archivist of the Comédie française. Fine restoration to cover. Tear without missing fold of last plate. Provenance: André Sciama, with bookplate. - Jules Couët, with bookplate.
