[MARRONI (Salvatore)]. [Costumes of the environs of Rome & Costumes of the papal court]. S.l., [circa 1840]. - Two large volumes in-8 (250 x 192 mm), 34 and 44 plates mounted on tabs and protected by serpents. Brown half-maroquin, spine with 4 faux-nerfs decorated with gilded fillets and fleurons (20th-century binding). Unique collection of 65 delightful original watercolors and 13 watercolor engravings, very freshly colored. They depict costumes from around Rome and the papal court. The plates, unsigned, are captioned in graphite in Italian and French, with the exception of 7 engravings for which the Italian caption is printed. These costumes seem to have been inspired by two suites published in Rome by Salvatore Marroni (1790-1872), in the mid-19th century, under the titles Nuova Raccolta di N° 40 costumi popolari di Roma (30 plates) and Raccolta dei principali Costumi Religiosi e Militari della corte Pontificia (40 plates). The engravings, however, come from another work. The first album is devoted to costumes in the vicinity of Rome. It includes 34 original watercolors depicting various occupations in the Italian countryside (shepherd, reaper, fisherman, winegrower, salad merchant, etc.) and in various regions (Sezze, Noreia, Nettuno, Poli, Subiaco, etc.). The second album includes 31 original watercolors and 13 watercolor engravings, depicting the ecclesiastical and military costumes of the papal court: cardinal deacon, bishop in pontifical habit, pope in audience habit, pope in private habit, master of the Holy Office, knight of Malta in full regalia, Swiss sergeant, papal flyboy, etc. A good copy. Spine and spinebands faded, some freckling.
