FRAIPONT (Gustave).
L'Art de composer et de peindre l'éventail, l'écran, le paravent.
Paris : H. Laurens, [1893]. - In-4, 295 x 235: frontispiece, (4 ff. first blank), 160 pp. 32 plates. Leaves, uncut, blue cloth portfolio with paper flaps, decorated with a color fan and gilt title on upper board, ties (publisher's portfolio).

First edition and first print run of this charming publication, in the Art Nouveau style, by Gustave Fraipont (1849-1923), drawing teacher at the Maison d'éducation de la Légion d'honneur.

"At once a practical volume and a luxury work, with historical notions. First, a series of studies, veritable lessons on the art of composition, on the art of painting with regard to those objects which have always held a particular attraction for women, and which occupy such a large place in modern decoration and furnishing. In writing this book, M. Fraipont [...] had in mind above all [...] people of taste [...] who are highly capable of composing charming works and who find themselves held back by the difficulties of the "trades". "How should we prepare the fabric or skin on which we want to paint? What colors should be used? How do you go about it? M. Fraipont's book answers these questions, giving the easiest ways out, and accompanying his advice and notes with a series of reproductions, some of which are particularly charming" (Le Livre & l'image, 1894, vol. 3, p. 103).

The edition is illustrated with 32 plates, including 16 in color after watercolors by the author, and 94 black compositions in the text.

ONE OF 40 VERY RARE EXAMPLES ON IMPERIAL JAPANESE MANUFACTURING PAPER, the only large paper edition, with a suite of all 32 plates on white glossy paper.

A very fine, uncut copy in its publisher's portfolio.
Portfolio lining and cloth ties renewed.
