Paris: Librairie de Gide fils, [1825]. - Large in-8, 276 x 176 : (59 ff), 63 plates. Marbled half-fauve, spine ribbed and decorated, untrimmed (D. Montecot).

Colas, no. 1017. - Hiler, no. 300.

Rare edition illustrated with 63 engraved and colored costume plates, reproduced from Lory and Moritz's Costumes suisses dédiés à son altesse royale le Prince royal de Prusse, dessinés d'après nature (1824).

It was published by travel book collector Jean-Baptiste Eyriès (1767-1846), one of the founders of the Société de géographie. Gifted with a prodigious memory, he spoke 9 languages. He published several geographical works and translated numerous accounts of travelers and explorers from English, German and Scandinavian languages. He also contributed to several encyclopedic works.

This title is part of a series of 8 works forming the collection Costumes, mœurs et usages de tous les peuples, published from 1821 onwards, each title of which could be purchased separately. The Swiss title is the largest, while the others, concerning other countries, comprise between 18 and 36 plates only. The publication also exists in in-18 format, except for Spain and France.

Copies of this title complete with all 63 plates, as is the case here, are very rare.

A fine copy bound in the 19th century style by the gilder and bookbinder Didier Montécot, a former student of the École Estienne.

Spine faded. First plate torn but not missing. Some foxing and light dampening.
