The open hand, "to receive and to give", is naturally a strong symbol of Corbusé's imagination: that of the passing on of knowledge from elders to the young.
In the Punjabi city of Chandigarh, for which he designed the overall plan and the most emblematic buildings from 1951 until his death in 1965, Le Corbusier never ceased to commission the construction of an immense sculpture of an open hand in enamelled sheet metal, overlooking the agora nicknamed the "Fosse de la Considération". Construction of the sculpture would not take place until 20 years after the architect's death, in the mid-1980s.
