°Xinxue Liao (廖新學 1903-1958), vertical painting on silk, China, 20th century Ink and pigments on silk depicting a lake and mountain landscape in the traditional sansui (山水) style, where a fisherman leads his boat with the help of a pole, between two banks, in a melancholy atmosphere. Signed upper left in Chinese with red seal 於巴黎 新學作 - yú bā lí Xīnxué zuò - "in Paris, made by Xinxue". Signed lower right in Roman letters Liao. 72 x 53 cm Framed under glass. Liao Xinxue (1906?-1958), a 20th-century Chinese painter and sculptor, overcame a difficult childhood to become a museum apprentice in Kunming in 1919, where he studied traditional Chinese painting. In 1933, he moved to Paris to train at the École nationale supérieure des beaux-arts, attending the studios of Jean Boucher and Marcel Gaumont. He exhibited in prestigious salons, winning several medals for his sculptures. Returning to China in 1948, he settled in Kunming, teaching at the university and helping to found the Yunnan College of Art. His artistic legacy, in painting and sculpture, remains significant.
