Attributed to Lê Quôc Lôc (1918-1987), lacquer panel on predominantly red background, Vietnam, 20th century It depicts a young herdsman seated against a tree, playing a flute. Beside him, near a stream, lies a water buffalo on which two birds are pecking. A no, the traditional Vietnamese headdress, a teapot and a book placed at the child's feet suggest in the arrangement of this serene, bucolic scene the little moment of rest taken by the child during his daily chores. The use of predominantly dark lacquer for the decoration contrasts with the red ochre background. Lower right, engraved signature Lê Quôc Lôc 1976. 31 x 36.8 cm Mounted in a frame.
