Four Indo-Portuguese statuettes with Christian subjects in polychrome wood, probably Goa, 18th - 19th century Carved in the round with polychromy, inspired by Christian productions from Portugal or Spain. They represent two saints, one of whom bears a label indicating San Isidro, and two Virgin Marys, one of whom is on a pedestal. Six black circles around a central circle of the same size on the red garment of a Virgin Mary could be interpreted as a mon, the coat of arms of a samurai clan. Height: 39 cm; length: 14 cm for the largest. Provenance: Former Japanese collection in Kyoto. These works, often produced in Goa but also in the Philippines, were used by the Jesuits to evangelize the peoples of Asia.
