Rectangular lacquered wood box with rounded edges, Japan, Meiji period (1868-1912) The lid features a circular medallion decorated in gold, silver and black hiramaki e with Hotei carrying his bag of riches. Surrounding circles on a black background sprinkled with gold glitter feature two pairs of hoho flying among branches of plum blossoms in red and gold hiramaki e. The edges of the box are decorated, in the same tones, with musical instruments and auspicious objects surrounded by plum blossom branches on a nashiji lacquer background. The inside of the box and lid are in nashiji lacquer. 8.4 x 15 x 11.8 cm A few chips, the bottom of the box slightly split on part of the perimeter.
