SCHMIED (François-Louis) - WILDE (Oscar). Deux contes. Paris : François-Louis Schmied, 1926. -In-4, : 269 x 225 (8 ff. 2 first blanks), XXIX pp., (2 ff.), XXIV pp., (9 ff. 3 last blanks), illustrated cover. . Lemon morocco, boards decorated with horizontal gilded fillets, passing over the spine, a wide vertical band of white morocco surrounded by a wide band of black chagrin and two thinner bands of beige and gray morocco, The first board also includes the title in large blue morocco letters, edged with gilded fillets, large ornate inner frame with the same decoration as the boards, blue suede lining and endpapers, untrimmed, cover and spine preserved, case (Pierre Legrain). Edition of Le Prince heureux and Le Rossignol et la rose, 2 tales by Oscar Wilde in translation by Albert Savine. Produced by François-Louis SCHMIED (1873-1941), it is illustrated with 63 compositions drawn and woodcut in color by the artist, including a cover illustration and 4 full-page engravings. But the main part consists of vertical bands for the first story and horizontal bands for the second. These headbands were considered by the artist to be works in their own right, rather than ornaments; each has a caption indicated in a table at the end of the book. Limited edition of 162 numbered copies on wove paper, signed by the artist in the colophon, this one being one of 150 numbered in Arabic numerals, bearing number 138. A very fine and precious copy bound in the period by Pierre Legrain, from the prestigious library of Bernard Loliée. An almost identical binding was produced by Legrain for Henri Prost and appears in the 1963 Daniel Sicklès sale catalog (Bibliothèque d'un amateur, II, 1963, ). The description given in this catalog mentions shagreen and a chemise, which seem to be the only differences with the binding of our copy. Both are very valuable. A perfectly preserved copy. We note, as always, the transfer of certain illustrations. Provenance: Bernard Loliée, with bookplate (cat. III, March 20, 2013, no. 110). - N. Harwich, with bookplate.
