REDON (Odilon) - FLAUBERT (Gustave).
La Tentation de Saint Antoine.
Paris : Ambroise Vollard, 1933 [1938]. -Large folio, 434 x 325: (4 ff. first 2 blank), 205 pp. (9 ff. first and last 2 blank), 22 plates, illustrated cover. In sheets, filled cover.

New edition of this precious work illustrated by Odilon REDON (1840-1916), with 15 wood-engraved compositions in the text, including one on the title, 7 at the head of chapters and 7 on plates, as well as 22 ORIGINAL LITHOGRAPHIES OUT OF TEXT, printed on china paper.

Redon produced three separate series of illustrations for Flaubert's work. The first was commissioned by Edmond Deman and published in 1888. The second appeared the following year. The third series was finally commissioned by Ambroise Vollard, and published in a limited edition of 50 copies in 1896. The lithographs from this run, printed by lithographer Auguste Clot (1858-1936), were used for this edition, whose text, printed in 1933, was enriched with woodcuts executed around 1910 after drawings by Redon. However, the official publication did not appear until 1938, as the date on the cover indicates, and only "exhibition" copies were distributed during Vollard's lifetime. The latter did not include the table leaf of out-of-text illustrations featuring reproductions of the 22 woodcut lithographs by Georges Aubert in 1939, printed after Vollard's death. Aubert's woodcuts "form a work of art in their own right: [they] are not arranged according to the order of the images in the text, but in such a way as to create a new composition" (Vollard, Petiet et l'estampe de maîtres, 2022, p. 57).

The edition was limited to 245 copies; this is ONE OF THE FIRST 25 NUMBERED ON MARAIS VELIN (no. 12) watermarked "La Tentation de Saint Antoine". It is complete with the leaves containing the table of out-of-text illustrations.

A very well preserved copy, despite a few tears to the folder containing the lithographs.
