[REVUE]. Le Cheval de 4. Peloponese 9. - Deda L-E. [Paris, 1940]. - 2 fascicules in-folio, 371 x 253. In sheets. Extremely rare first edition of the first two of four issues of this publication conceived by Michel Tapié, Henri Bernard, Aline Gagnaire and Jean Jausion, virtually all contributors to the neo-Dadaist-inspired group Les Réverbères founded in 1938. These two brochures were published at the start of the Occupation and at the end of an era for the French avant-garde. They are the most interesting because they feature collective creations, unlike the last two, published in 1941 and 1944 respectively, which are more personal creations. Composed by the editors, they offer short texts in distinctive typography, embellished by abstract and figurative woodcuts with intensive use of color. In this way, they break away from surrealism and return to a more Dadaist approach. Indeed, the titles set the tone, not unlike those of the "Dada" magazine published from 1917 onwards. Cheval de 4 not only evokes the sequel to Cheval de Troie, in reference to the situation at the time, but "Cheval" is synonymous with "Dada". The title of the second issue uses the word Daedalus, but with the letters separated. It is thus written DEDA L-E, a direct reference to the 1919 double issue of Dada, titled with the same letters "DADA 4-5". Le Cheval de 4 was the first issue to appear, in which all the publishers took part. Only 32 copies were printed, plus 5 on Hollande wove paper. This is one of these 5 copies on Hollande, justified "papier de Hollande N° II/V". It is complete with the original, unsigned off-text drawing. Two leaves are on Arches laid paper. Deda L-E appeared a few months later, with contributions from Noël Arnaud, Henri Bernard, Simone Bry, Maurice Frédéric, Aline Gagnaire, Jean Jausion, Jean Marembert, Loys Masson, André Poujet and Michel Tapié. It was printed in an edition of 31 numbered copies, this one numbered 23. Copies are so rare that it is difficult to find reproductions. Deda L-E appears to be missing one or two leaves, containing two texts by Aline Gagnaire and one by Maurice Frédéric, but the two leaves containing Hippophone 1 and 2, Peloponese 7 and Le fils de Narcisse are present. The laminated drawing in Le Cheval de 4 has a tear but is not missing.
