[ENLUMINURE]. Two leaves from a book of hours
In Latin, illuminated manuscript on parchment.
Belgium, Bruges, circa 1460-1470.
Size of leaves: 200 x 150 mm
Illuminated borders, with figures including a craftsman (leather worker or goldsmith?); cardinal: St. Christopher carrying the Christ Child.

The style of these leaves suggests that they can be traced back to Bruges and its production of illuminated books of hours, sometimes intended for export to Spanish, English or French clients. These borders are reminiscent of those found in a Book of Hours painted in Bruges, intended and adapted for a Catalan patron (Waddesdon Manor, Waddesdon MS 9), with small historiated scenes in the margins, sometimes grotesques that seem to spring out of or coiled in the acanthus leaves.
