Hermann Vogel (1856-1918) Ink on China paper pasted on board, 17 x 21 cm. Signature lower right. Annotation in pencil: "en-tête de Machscheve". Tear in upper right corner, without loss. Illustration for the Machscheve tale (Contes Juifs by Sacher-Masoch), but appears to have been inspired by the series L'arroseur published by Vogel in 1887 with Quantin, the publisher of Contes Juifs. Hermann Vogel, famous cartoonist and illustrator, creator of the humorous series Les arroseurs arrosés (1887), inspired Louis Lumière's Les vues comiques in 1895. Leopold Sacher-Masoch (Lviv 1836-Mannheim 1895) was born into a noble family in Galicia. A prolific author, he was not only a disciple of the sulphurous eroticism that psychiatrist Krafft-Ebing called masochism. Revolted by the anti-Semitism of Galician aristocrats and fascinated by Jewish communities, in 1888 he published a collection of stories written entirely in French, entitled Contes juifs.
