Henri-Guillaume Schlesinger (1814-1893)
Galeb Jekarim
Wash heightened with gouache
Signature lower left.
43 x 46 cm
Scene from the tale Galeb Jekarim (Jewish Tales by Sacher-Masoch) in which, in a mysterious atmosphere, a temptress appears to Galeb, who is thinking only of Jerusalem.
In Contes Juifs, the publisher Quantin mistakenly attributes the authorship of this work to Alphonse Lévy.
Leopold Sacher-Masoch (Lviv 1836-Mannheim 1895) was born into a noble family in Galicia. A prolific writer, he was not only a disciple of the sulphurous eroticism that psychiatrist Krafft-Ebing called masochism. Revolted by the anti-Semitism of Galician aristocrats and fascinated by Jewish communities, in 1888 he published a collection written entirely in French, entitled Contes juifs.
