Édouard LŒVY (1857-1910)
Esther and her father
Indian ink drawing.
28 x 25 cm
Illustration of the tale of Aman and Esther. Esther appears in a splendid kazabaika (fur jacket) before her blind father.
A Polish painter and decorator, Édouard Lœvy was a member of the Artistes Français and worked for the Larousse encyclopedia.
Leopold Sacher-Masoch (Lviv 1836-Mannheim 1895) was born into a noble family in Galicia. A prolific author, he was not only a disciple of the sulphurous eroticism that psychiatrist Krafft-Ebing named masochism. Revolted by the anti-Semitism of Galician aristocrats and fascinated by Jewish communities, in 1888 he published a collection written entirely in French, entitled Contes juifs.
