ANTI-SEMITISM - GERMAN YIDDISH
Itzig Feitel Stern (pseudonym of Johann Friedrich Sigmund, Baron von Holzschuher), Die Schabbes Lamp vun pollische Messing. Meissen, F.W. Goedsche, 1835. 175-105 mm. [1], X, 142, [2] pp. + [1] pl. period boards. With modern cardboard slipcase.
A very singular collection of facetious plays in Western Yiddish (Judeo-German): playlets, songs, anecdotes featuring Jewish characters and their particular language. The author of this collection, jokingly entitled "Polish brass Sabbath lamp lit with real kosher shadows", was a German Christian aristocrat who enjoyed writing a series of facetious texts mocking southern German Jews in the early 19th century. Working as a judge, he had the opportunity to observe the customs and language of Franconia's Jewish farming communities. The book concludes with a glossary of several hundred Judeo-German-Yiddish words, constituting one of the earliest testimonies to the specifically German form of the Central European Jewish dialect.
