XVIIIth CENTURY - VOLTAIRE
[Abbé Guénée], Lettres de quelques juifs portugais et allemands à Monsieur de Voltaire avec des réflexions critiques & c... et un petit commentaire extrait d'un plus grand. Lisbon and Paris, Prault, 1769, one vol. in 8°, full marbled calf, smooth spine decorated with gilt fillets and fleurons, title page on red morocco, blue marbled edges. Discreet wear to the hinges, otherwise a fine copy of the uncommon first edition of one of the great bestsellers of the 18th and early 19th centuries, with over thirty editions recorded, for this rejoinder to Voltaire's anti-Semitism, in which the famous Dutch Jewish economist Isaac Pinto collaborated. The faux-title reads "Lettres sur divers écrits de M. de Voltaire, par quelques juifs portugais et allemands" ("Letters on various writings by M. de Voltaire, by some Portuguese and German Jews"). Abbé Guénée, author of most of the volume, was sous - précepteur to the children of the Comte d'Artois, the future Charles X (Barbier II, 1260, c).
