FIRST EMPIRE - FRENCH PRAYERS Mardochée Venture. Prières journalières à l'usage des Juifs portugais ou espagnols ... auxquelles on a ajouté des notes élémentaires, pour faciliter l'intelligence. Paris, Lévy aîné, 1807, five parts with separate paginations and titles bound at the time in four volumes in 12, full speckled basane, gilt framing chain around the boards, smooth spine decorated with gilt filets and fleurons (quivers and suns), gilt titles and tomaison on red and green morocco parts, yellow edges. Handwritten bookplate "Mme D. Espir". The entire text (which covers daily prayers and those for all feasts, and also includes a hagada, the Passover ritual) is in French, with only a few scattered Hebrew words in the prayer titles, these Hebrew words being followed by their phonetic transcription in Latin characters according to the pronunciation of the communities of Bayonne and Bordeaux. A copy in a homogeneous period binding, in good condition (corners dulled, small lacks on the headpieces; three cm of leather missing from volume 2 - Kippur - with cracks on the hinges of this volume; good condition inside) of the complete series of this ritual, which first appeared at the Nice and Paris addresses in 1773 and was reprinted in 1807 at the time of Napoleon's convocation of the Grand Sanhedrin in Paris. Curiously, on page 321 of Volume I, the "Prayer for the King" from the 1773 edition is reprinted unchanged, as if the publisher didn't know that it was an Emperor who, in 1807, had been reigning in France for several years. First complete translation of the Jewish prayers into French, very rare in a complete series.
