FRANCO-JUDAISM - JOSEPH SALVADOR
Joseph Salvador. Law of Moses or religious and political system of the Hebrews. Paris, Ridan, 1822. In-8, xiv, 611 p., half blond basane, blue morocco title-piece, Empire roulettes, yellow edges, good condition.
Joseph Salvador (1796-1873), one of the first historians of Judaism, sometimes considered proto-Zionist, made a specialty of studying the political and moral institutional systems of the East. This text, which describes the institutional system of the Hebrews at the time of Moses in an interesting pre-scientific way, is the best illustration of this. In addition to the canonical text of the Bible, the author draws on references from rabbinic literature. An unusual work. A good copy of the first edition of this text, one of the first by a French Jew, in French, devoted to his own theology.
The copy bears the handwritten bookplate of Philippe-Sirice Bridel, the "Doyen Bridel", a famous Swiss pastor known for his work on Helvetic patois and the human geography of his nation, who has added the following handwritten note: "The author is Jewish and does honor to his nation".
