Georges BOULANGER (1837-1891) general and politician. 2 L.A.S., Jersey [1890], to Charles Laisant, deputy of the Seine; 10pages in-8, envelopes. Interesting political letters. March 6. "Rightly or wrongly, the people have seen in me the champion of their demands, the discontented have chosen me as their syndic, honest people as their defender"... But for some time now, the members of the National Republican Party Committee have been forgetting a little about their trilogy of "the revision, the constituent, the referendum": "we're still doing revisionism, but very little boulangisme; and above all we're letting those who want to do it without Boulanger do it without protesting"; thus Magnard's remark in Le Figaro that "boulangisme outlives its leader" has not been refuted... Their supporters need to take a clear stand... He doesn't confuse Morès with Drumont, but Boulanger won't give "not one valiant penny" without the candidate coming to ask him, "thus proving his devotion to the party and to me personally". Laisant did well "to communicate to the committee my letter concerning Boulangisme without Boulanger. Perhaps it will give pause to certain strong heads"... March 7. "I've just read what concerns me in Drumont's trash La dernière bataille": it's "vile turpitudes" written to serve the cause of Jules Ferry, and he hopes that the members of the Committee will break "with the man who tried to drag the leader of their party through the mud. - What about those brave candidates from the anti-Semitic league for the town council?"... He accepts none of them, and writes specially to Laur, "that in the event of his insisting on continuing a friendly trade with such a character, his place would no longer be on the Committee"... 2 proclamations by HENRI V, Comte de CHAMBORD are enclosed: Venice April 27, 1852 (ms copy), and Frohsdorf October 15, 1852 (autographed).
