ASSURANCE. P.S. by Pierre Ducros, Nantes April 12, 1783; 1page in-fol. partly printed (tears with loss of text in upper right corner, edges faded). Insurance policy for the Nantes ship Le Grand-Duc de Toscane. Insurance policy for the vessel Le Grand-Duc de Toscane, commanded by Captain Gervaise, destined for the islands of France and Bourbon (Mauritius and Reunion). It was issued by Nantes shipowner Guillaume Bouteiller (1713-1802), on behalf of Laurent Bourgeois (1725-1785), of Lorient, himself represented by Pierre Ducros, of Nantes. The ship leaves Nantes "for the Isles of France & Bourbon [...] Risks will only cease twenty-four hours after the arrival of the said ship [...I Agreed that in the event of war, hostilities or reprisals between France & some maritime powers, the above premium will be increased at the market rate". This is followed by a handwritten note stating that the insurance policy taken out with Bouteiller is for 7,000 livres, and that another policy taken out with Quatreville et Cie is for 10,000 livres. A pinned attachment contains a calculation of the commission to be paid by Bourgeois to broker Pierre Ducros. Attached is a bill of lading on the letterhead of Lefebvre & Hemery, Paris April 27, 1772, in the name of Bourgeois, treasurer of the navy in Lorient.
