George SAND. L.A.S., [Nohant] January 24, 1872, [to Charles-Edmond]; 4pages in-12.
She sends her friend, editor of the newspaper Le Temps, her "feuilleton" (of her Impressions et Souvenirs), "and there will be yet another on the subject of learning to read. It's silly, but it's useful and timely, and I hope my Flaubert won't eat me. It's not art that I'm devoting to this practical thing, and you don't always have to make art. There are sometimes better things to do, whatever he says". She insists on correcting the proof, because "there are many technical things and one letter in place of another would confuse everything".
As for Edgar Quinet's book [La Création]: "As soon as he touches on man, he becomes admirable again. I read it in small doses, but I'm charmed by it, and I think you were right to speak so highly of it, you didn't say too much; it's a beautiful book".
Then she comments on the political crisis: "So we've been through yet another revolution between two waters? We haven't had time to realize it here. That same day we learned of the resignation and reconciliation. I already thought that Plauchut was going to propose the King of Araucania. That's for another time"...
She adds: "I'm writing to you at 3 a.m., to the sound of lightning, greenish moonlight, storm clouds, trees lying under the raffale. It's very fantastic and very pretty. Everything is asleep in Nohant, as if nothing had happened. I'm the only one to notice a terrible commotion outside"...
