Marcel PAGNOL (1895-1974). Autograph manuscript, Hamlet. Preface, [1947]; 17pages small in-4 in a brown-covered schoolbook. Preface to Hamlet for his translation of Shakespeare's play (1947). The notebook, on whose cover other titles are noted, contains the text entitled La Folie d'Hamlet (fragments, some passages crossed out with a red line). "Is he mad? Is he not mad? [...] Hamlet simulates madness. Like all simulators, he has a good reason for playing this comedy: his life is in danger. On the other hand, like all pretenders, he pushes the comedy to the limit, which means he overdoes it"... Pagnol also considers Hamlet's homosexuality. On the back of the pages, we find the outline of a play entitled L'Idiot du Village, a few notes on mechanics, and 2 verses for the translation of Les Bucoliques.
