Félicité de LAMENNAIS (1782-1854). L.A.S. "F. M.", La Chenaie March 16 [1822], to his "good friend" Baron de Vitrolles; 2 1/2 pages in-8 (slight wetness).
He was far from suspecting that his friend was so ill. "I will only be reassured when I see your handwriting". He advises him to take it easy during his convalescence: relapses are dangerous. "A bit of countryside in the spring would be, I think, an excellent remedy", and he'd like him to join him at La Chenaie: "We'd chat, we'd walk, ride, as you please. We'd discuss politics and philosophy, in all joy and freedom, if joy and politics are two things that can go together today. The future seems extremely bleak to me, and that's why I don't want to throw myself into it. It would be like a second illness coming upon you. There is talk here of upcoming elections. They wanted to appoint me, but I declared that I had made up my mind not to accept. I'd have to be terribly mad to throw myself into this mess of chambers. This year, I would almost never have agreed with anyone. It is an untenable position, when one is deprived of the advantage of being able to make up one's own mind, like M. Fiévée"... He concludes: "believe that no one loves you more tenderly than the hermit of La Chenaie".
We enclose 2 other small L.A.S.; an interesting l.a.s. from Père Gioacchino Ventura to Lamennais (December 1825) about the Essai sur l'indifférence; a l.a.s. from Abbé Nicolas to Lamennais (1833); and a manuscript: Livre IV, De la Société temporelle (33p. in-4). Plus 4 L.A.S. and one L.S. from MONTALEMBERT, [1831]-1868.
