Édith PIAF. L.A.S. "Pupuce", [Lausanne] March 2, 1946 to "Mon adoré" [Yves Montand]; 4pages small in-4 from a school notebook (numbered "15e").
Beautiful love letter to Yves Montand during his tour of Switzerland.
After 15 days apart, she misses her beloved: "I'm sick of this country and I'm especially sick of not seeing you". She's "still a bit tired, but a bit better than before [...] I hear that in an article you say that I'm the woman of your life... is that true? So you love me? Wow!". She had lunch with the French consul and other personalities, and had to sing "fifteen songs, an hour and a quarter on stage, you bet if they like it, I'm very proud of it, isn't it my country that I represent? and to see that I'm doing a bit of good for France in my little sphere, I'm all moved by it". She takes great care with her grooming, and receives many compliments on it. "I'm delighted to have stopped drinking, when I think of the idiotic reputation I've built up thanks to my so-called friends". She encourages Montand to read; she found him Bergson's Le Rire "(I think it's pretty hard to read)", and Erasmus' In Praise of Folly. She looks forward to daily letters and to Montand's understanding and courage. She looks at the photo he gave her, where his nose is red: "Dame, from kissing you so much, you look like you've been drinking, you don't look serious at all". She plans to meet him again in their new apartment: "Tell yourself that every day that passes is a step towards our definitive union and that I love you with all the strength I'm capable of, that is to say great to brave everything to howl to sing to fight with life!"...
