Giovanni Battista NOFERI (1730-1782). Six Trios for two Violins and a Violoncello ... humbly inscribed to Ralph Milbank Esqr. Op. 17 (London, J. Blundell, [ca. 1780]); 3 volumes in-fol. of [1]-17, 14 and 14p. in contemporary olive-green morocco bindings, wide gilded frieze framing the boards, red morocco title-pieces with gilded lettering and frame on the upper boards, ornate spines, gilt edges.
A very fine dedication copy of these trio sonatas, dedicated to Byron's father-in-law.
Noferi, an Italian violinist and guitarist, lived in England, notably in Cambridge, Durham and London, where he died, and where he played at the King's Theatre and for Johann Christian Bach and Friedrich Abel.
Engraved music, in three parts: Violino primo, Violino secondo and Basso.
Despite the title, each piece is designated as a "Sonata" in the score. Particularly noteworthy is the expanded role of the cello, departing from the usual use of the bass, notably in the Minuetto of Sonata V and the Largo of Sonata VI.
The title-pieces on the rich bindings read: Noferi's Trios inscribed to Ralph Milbank Esqr, showing that this is the copy of the dedicatee, Ralph Milbank, 6th Baronet (1747-1825), Member of Parliament for County Durham; his daughter Anne Isabella, nicknamed Annabella (1792-1860) married Lord Byron.
