Vincent d'INDY (1851-1931). 2 L.A.S., 1882-1889, to ladies; 3 and 2pages in-8. Valence October 21, 1882, to Mme de Chambrun. "Knowing for a long time how interested you are in the art of music and how much you love musical archaeology and the frank, naive melodies of the past, I take the liberty of sending you Monsieur Michaëlis, who has undertaken under the title of: Chefs-d'œuvre classiques de l'Opéra Français, a faithful and completely authentic reconstitution of works from the 17th and 18th centuries; most of these works, little known today, only existed in the form of arrangements and adaptations made without respect for the original text. To revive these monuments in their original purity and naivety is the aim of M. Michaëlis", bringing to light "admirable works by Campra, Rameau and Destouches, which until now have been almost totally ignored by amateurs and even artists". D'Indy himself undertook the reconstruction of Destouches' Éléments, "a score which contains passages of sublime poetry and truth of expression"... Paris April 17, 1889. He sends "two choirs for female voice with solo, which have just been published", asking his correspondent "to patronize these little works in Bordeaux, a city which I know to be extremely musical and in which I have never had the pleasure of seeing myself performed"...
