Jean PUY (1876-1960). 4 L.A.S. and 2 drawings, 1945-1952, to Kurt Groger, "painter" (2 to Mrs. Groger); 2pages in-8 each letter, envelopes; plus drawings.
Friendly letters to his "colleague and studio neighbor".
Lyon November 16, 1945. He worries about an echo on rents and a requisition of his apartment, as he thinks of returning to Paris, and about the fate of "this copious mess of paintings, books, drawings and vague furniture"... "Since my return to Roanne I have spent sessions painting chrysanthemums, but everything aborted miserably and I had to give them all up one after the other because by the Last Judgment I won't be out of it"... - Roanne January 1, 1946:"There is no reason to hope that 1946 will see a slight improvement in the state of all peoples, but it will be necessary to leave many illusions and political opinions. However, without believing in it too much, let's all believe in a kind of brotherhood of peoples. [...] In painting, it's much more difficult, since there is no longer any doctrine that stands upright. You have to come up with one that suits you, and that's really hard. But if everyone managed to do it, even in a sufficient way, it would certainly be very good, says Bonnard"...
Roanne April 8, 1952, about a painting that is not by his "very prestigious hand"; he has "never been tempted to paint children, perhaps because I've never had the taste for them"... He criticizes galleries that put lamps above the paintings. - May 16, details of places and dwellings in Brittany.
2 signed drawings: two nude women in black pencil (13x9cm), mounted on 17x13cm sheet with blue pencil frame; reclining nude from behind (13, 5x10cm), pen and blue ink, for vows 1852.
