Gyula Halàsz known as BRASSAÏ (1899-1984) photographer. L.A.S., New York June 4, 1973, to his beloved Babeth; 2 pages in-4. About his stay and exhibitions in America. He returned late from the Midi to Paris: "in the end I only had 3 weeks to prepare my 2 exhibitions in the United States (one in the Corcoran Museum in Washington on June 1, the other at the Within-Gallery on June 12) [...] Fortunately I was able to do everything on time and the photos arrived safely (in the diplomatic bag). We spent 5 really pleasant days in Washington, which is bathed in lush greenery. I especially liked George-town, with its small gardens full of magnolia, clematis, azaleas and rhododendrons. We lived in a hotel opposite the White House, and the exhibition was a great success. Many people came from New York, Chicago and even San Francisco to the inauguration, including Ansel Adams, America's most famous living photographer, from Carmel (near San Francisco). There was a dinner for 60 people in the museum, and I sold all my photographs. (The exhibition will continue in other cities - Chicago, etc.). I'm writing to you from a beautiful apartment across from Central Park that a friend put at our disposal [...] Last night (Sunday) there was a Puerto Rican party on Vth Avenue. It was as lively and colorful as the Rio carnival. Around the 15th we'll probably go to San Francisco (after an exhibition and the publication of the Brassaï Portfolio) and also to Los Angeles to see my old friend Henry Miller"...
