Alphonse de LAMARTINE (1790-1869). Autograph manuscript, Autun; 1page large in-4.
Detailed plan for a speech to the Saône-et-Loire General Council, probably unpublished.
The plan, partly redacted, is written in two columns, and divided into 4 parts.
It concerns a complaint from Autun requesting a fifth councillor.
"Affaire qui demand deux choses de nous - la bonne foi - la prudence dans l'explication. - So far, nothing has divided us. Fair to each other. The unity of the department has been our spirit"...
Having examined all aspects of the problem, Lamartine concludes:
"What is to be done? - Declare that Autun's claim is totally unfounded? - No. That would be an injustice.
Injustice is weak - the truth is there for all to see:
Yes, Autun has an arithmetical right - its administrative right is dubious. Let's say it.
But let's all say together: that we must hold our decision in abeyance - until the time when renewal&.
So justice to the principle
justice to Autun
justice to the department.)
Former René Doumic collection (June 14 1985, no. 81).
