Georges BERNANOS (1888-1948). L.A.S., December 26, 1944, [to M. Desy]; 4 pages in-8. Thanks to his friend, he had "the most beautiful and clearest Christmas night" since his childhood. He recalls the mass "overflowing with sweetness and peace, which was truly a mass among men, [...] a mass very much ours, poor sinners, the good Lord coming to rest, to catch his breath, in our home, in the home of one of our own, as in the old days.... Well, I say that very badly, so as not to risk saying it too well; you can never be too wary of literature"... He recalls the songs of the old country, carried so high in a burst of joy, and which made him think that "all this must have consoled the little Jesus to have had to listen, during the same Night, in his churches, to so many bigots and bigotes chilled by an incurable constipation of the soul, and whom the Holy Spirit himself has so much trouble warming!"... He will take this memory with him to the cruel old Europe...
