Georges BERNANOS (1888-1948). Autograph manuscript of part of La Joie; 56 pages and a quarter in-4 (bottom of 1st leaf slightly faded). This important fragment of La Joie appeared in La Revue universelle of December 15, 1928; the book was published by Plon in May 1929. The manuscript, in blue ink on squared paper, shows a few erasures and corrections; it was used for printing in the Revue universelle; a copyright notice has been added by Henri Massis at the bottom of the 1st leaf. This fragment belongs to the second part of the novel, along with the end of the third chapter and the whole of the fourth chapter (Œuvres romanesques complètes, Bibl. de la Pléiade, t.I, pp. 744-777). This is a key scene in the novel, in which Chantal de Clergerie takes part in the agony of Christ in the middle of the night, and in the vision of Judas' gallows, whose lament she listens to. During a long conversation, Abbé Cénabre's "imposture" is confronted by Chantal's "holiness": divine grace will touch Cénabre's soul. Former Daniel Sickles collection (Littérature du XXe siècle, 13-15 juin 1983, n°37).
