Henri ALAIN-FOURNIER (1886-1914). L.A.S., La Chapelle d'Angillon August 23, 1913, [to Yvonne Brochet de Quièvrecourt]; 2pages in-8.
Very beautiful and rare letter in the style of Yvonne de Galais.
Alain-Fournier sends her a copy of Marie-Claire, "which I asked my old friend Marguerite Audoux for you. I think you'll like it. I think you'll like the second part, so simple and yet so mysterious, which takes place among the peasants of Sologne. It's a book I've greatly admired. And I've just reread, with great emotion, the beautiful episode of Sœur Désirée-des-Anges in your copy. Since I left Rochefort [where he had found "Yvonne de Galais"], I have made several trips and am now settled for a few weeks in the village where I always spend part of my vacations. It's sometimes hard for me to bear the great calm, the perfect tranquillity of this Berry countryside. So much peace is made for happy people".
He asks for news of his friend's family: "How is that wise little boy I kissed; that charming, boisterous little girl who came to sit on my lap? [...] I wish the conversation we had in Rochefort were not interrupted forever. There are a thousand things about my life, my work, that I'd like to tell you. [...] I'm sure that your answers would give me valuable advice. I have always found in your words a prudence, a seriousness, that other young women don't have".
Assuring M. Brochet of his "perfectly deferential and sympathetic feelings", Alain-Fournier expresses his "very respectful and faithful friendship".
Former Daniel Sickles collection (Littérature du XXe siècle, 14-15 juin 1983, n°4)
