Henneguy, Lasellaz, Les amours, Paris, circa 1900
A rare double-sided folded fan, the silk gauze and paper leaf painted with a gallant scene in the taste of the 18th century. On a park terrace, two couples of young men and women are enjoying themselves, surrounded by sweethearts. Three of them are leaning over a balustrade. The composition is framed by foliage. Signed lower left "G. Lasellaz" for Gustave Lasellaz (1841-1918).
The transparent gauze top invites the viewer to discover the rest of the scene on the reverse. The reverse is painted with three young people watching lovers, some playing with a standard or a quiver, others in a boat.
Finely cut, carved, engraved and burgundy mother-of-pearl mount decorated with six lovers on a branch, amid garlands of roses. The scene is framed by golden ribbons. One branch bears the signature of sculptor Henneguy (1843-?). The plumes are carved with loves.
H.t. 27 cm-H.f. 16 cm (good condition, wear to folds, small cuts)
In a case decorated with flowers, bearing the fan maker's address "Duvelleroy London 167 Regent street" under the lid.

Louis-Honoré Henneguy was a renowned sculptor of the late 19th century. In 1889, the Revue des arts décoratifs described him as an artist who "excels in complicated and luxurious work". Gustave Lasellaz was a painter familiar to the Parisian fan houses. Both have won awards at art exhibitions.
