Nâsser ed-Dîn Shâh Qâjâr, who ruled Persia from 1848 until his death in 1896, was a great traveler, known for being the first Persian ruler to visit Europe in 1873. He also traveled extensively throughout his kingdom, visiting Khorasan twice, in 1286 A.H. / 1869 and 1300 A.H. / 1882. Each of his two journeys was recorded in an account, the second of which, which concerns us here, was written by the sovereign himself.
This account was published by Mohammad Hassan Khân Etimad al-Sultaneh in 1306 H / 1888 at the special government publishing house in Baft (Iran). The illustrations in this travelogue are the work of Abû Tarâb, the famous Egyptian painter whose signature appears on the portrait of the Shâh that introduces our version.
