Storage jar, Western Iran or Eastern Syria, 8th - 12th century
Large jar on a small circular foot, with a high baluster body topped by a cylindrical neck finished with a turned-up lip. The neck is flanked by six curved handles. Made of clay ceramic with rope-stamped decoration on the middle of the body and neck.
Height: 46 cm; neck diameter: 13.2 cm
Traces of clay on the base, a chip on one handle, iridescence.

At the Musée du Louvre in Paris, several fragments of a jar with rope decoration come from the excavations at Susa at the mouth of the Persian Gulf and are attributed to the 8th - 9th centuries (MAO S. 2437). But a complete jar similar to this one, but with only four handles, in the Metropolitan Museum, New York, is attributed to Iran or Iraq in the 10th-12th centuries (2019.570.16). These two examples from international collections therefore call for a cautious approach to dating, which we will stagger between the 8th and 12th centuries.
