A beautiful and ancient statue from the Komtin society, this type of sculpture was responsible for eradicating contagious diseases, but was also an object of power and social regulation, and could be used in the administration of justice. Standing with a particular impression of power befitting its function, arms detached from the body, hands flat on either side of the umbilicus, solid thighs and massive hips, this Montol statue is a superb classic example of the genre. Note the very fine surface erosion of the wood, which bears witness to its age, confirmed by its beautiful antique style.
Montol, Nigeria, late 19th - early 20th century
