Jean-Baptiste Carpeaux (1827-1875)
Child, the genius of History. 1860. Etching. 43 x 100. Delteil 2. Very fine proof on ivory laid paper. Some foxing and slight oxidation of the folio. Long oblique tear at right edge, slightly affecting the subject, restored on verso. Full margins.

Carpeaux produced only 8 etchings. This etching was executed in Paris in early 1860, in the studio of Joseph Soumy, whose portrait Carpeaux painted the same year. This portrait is now in the Musée Crozatier in Le Puy. Soumy and Carpeaux had met in Rome in 1854, where a shared passion for Michelangelo brought them together for the long term. Soumy also painted a portrait of his friend in 1860. The painting is in the Musée Bonnat-Helleu in Bayonne.
