Leonetto CAPPIELLO (1875-1942)
Mint-Pastille, 1932
Mixed media. Mounted on canvas.
Signed and dated lower right.
(Restored tear. Misses).
140 x 99 cm

Bibliography :
Rennert, p. 291, no. 471.

After the iconic red faun (see no. 4), Cappiello produced another poster for the same advertiser: a lively image of two elegant ladies quenching their thirst in a green setting to great effect (Rennert, p. 291, no. 471). By 1932, he had entered his synthetic period, and proposed a more radical approach: against a black background and on a bench, a summer couple quench their thirst. He, dressed all in white, she, all green, leaning on the white spot of her companion... great graphic design backed by a resolutely modern slogan: "freshness itself". As far as we know, the poster never saw the light of day: too risky for the advertiser?
