Leonetto CAPPIELLO (1875-1942) Marseille Colonial Exhibition, 1922 Mixed media - tiled. Mounted on canvas. Signed and dated lower right. (Small tears and rubbing). 199 x 130 cm Bibliography : Rennert, p. 228, no. 356. Given his stature, it was only logical that Cappiello should be called upon for official commissions, notably exhibitions. In 1920, it was for the Monaco exhibition (Rennert, p 197, no. 298), in 1922 for the Marseille colonial exhibition. In both cases, he used a female allegory. Here, it's France, protector of her colonies, who, at her feet, pay homage to her... a perfect composition in which, against a dark background, stands out a woman with a benevolent smile - a white veil to attract the eye.
