Leonetto CAPPIELLO (1875-1942)
Rhum Madinina, circa 1920
Mixed media. Mounted on canvas.
Signed lower right.
(Missing. Tears at edges. Stains and rubbing.
144 x 95.5 cm

Cappiello has always adored the Pierrots, the central characters of Commedia dell'arte. As early as 1905, he designed a poster for the Severin clown performing "Chand d'habits" at the Folies Bergères (Rennert, p. 87, no. 93). Here, he's having the time of his life, depicting a full-figured Pierrot with a penchant for the bottle - he's got four in his ample suit, plus the ones he drinks from the neck. Perhaps too much for the advertiser, as it doesn't appear that this jubilant model was ever published! Today, that would have been unthinkable anyway.
